"We borrow the language of deadly combat and violent crime in order to make losing a lot worse and more important than it really is." - "Making it Matter: Lessons from Real Sports" 14:09. via YouTube. Today as a group we were tasked into making a competitive board game using rules and inspiration based on a live action sport. In this case my group chose to use the sport Basketball. Basketball is a highly competitive sport. This results in a lot of trash talking between both teams and player to player. As we tested out our Basketball board game, there was a level of competition between one another. The trash talking was light hearted and not violent in any way but this conveyed a level of competition and an urge to win the game.
"If there is no danger of a penalty, the stakes are lowered." - "Making it Matter: Lessons from Real Sports." 15:45. via YouTube. Just like Basketball the sport, our board game incorporated some of the same rules and fouls . Just like fouling a player in Basketball when they are shooting results in the player that was fouled to get a free throw. This means they get the chance to either score an extra point, two points, or even three points. Other types of fouls can result in a turnover of who has the possession of the ball. One bad move of one team can make the other team get the ball. A bad pass can also result in the ball being turned over as well.
"You can build your game out from the ground up that is designed to be watched by a crowd and played at a party." - "Making it Matter: Lessons from Real Sports" 9:00. via YouTube. The game we made is in fact a game you can play in front of a crowd. It shares similarities to games such as Chess and Checkers in a sense that you must move pieces around on a gridded board. Chess is very popular around the world and there have been many instances where Chess tournaments are held in front of audiences and on live TV.
