Dev Log #8

"Your finished design will eventually have to make it through eight tests, or filters." - O'Reilly Chapter 8. "The Game Improves through Iteration." Today we play tested our card game again. My whole group and I were not together this time, instead we had other people from other games playtest it with us. Each member from other teams who came to playtest gave advice on how the game could be improved.  Each time the people gave us advice, we implemented something new into each playtest. We ended up playing it at least 4 times with a new rule or mechanic and it made the outcome of each game a little different.

"Sometimes, in the course of design, you may find a need to change one of the filters—perhaps originally you targeted one demographic."  - "O'Reilly Chapter 8. "The Game Improves through Iteration." One of the mechanics in the game was needed to be changed. This card added more space for the amount of people you can put on the bus. We noticed that this card was not actually used a whole bunch because it did not have a whole lot of use to it. So we decided to take that mechanic out and make it to where you can use the card to take away space from the opposing team. This proved to be a lot more useful and it can interupt the game for your opponents. It started to be used a lot more. Before we added this mechanic, this card felt like just another card to use just to make the game last a little longer.

"If you are designing a new game, by definition, there needs to be something new about it, something players haven’t seen before." - O'Reilly Chapter 8. "The Game Improves through Iteration." My group and I agree that this game was more unique compared to the other card games in the class. It was the only game that required to teams. It was also the only game that utilized the numbers on the card. It utilized them by involving math with it. We added addition and subtraction to the game. I myself haven't played a card game that has math involved in it.
