Week 2- Quotes in Games
"We play because we are human, and we need to understand what makes us human, not in an evolutionary or cognitive way but in a humanistic way. Play is the force that pulls us together." -Sicart, pg. 26. Coming together with our teams and as a class, play testing each of our games formed a better bond than it would have if we weren't to do so. We all got an understanding for who everyone is after teaming up together or playing against each other.
"Free movement within a rigid structure" - Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman, pg, 33. Our game that me and my team made followed a very narrow set of instructions but it also allowed for the play members to move in a wide area to play. It must follow the rules but you are allowed to move wherever you want.
"Uncontrollable randomness can undermine a player's skill." - Caillois, pg, 37. My group and I played another groups game called Group Juggle. The objective was to throw around bean bags to other people. The person you throw the beanbag to is completely random. So this game requires a but of coordination and timing even though the outcome of the game can be completely random.
